Money Plant Information

What is Money Plant?
Money plants (pothos) are evergreen climbers that can grow up to 20 m high, requiring no extensive care. They are very easy to grow, both in soil and water filled bottles, jars and any container. Money plant care is quite easy and needs no expertise. I have also grown money plant trees inside old fused bulbs/globes and bottles. These bulbs hanging from a thread looks amazing showing the plant's green leaves along with white root system inside the bulb. The money plant can be grown as an indoor or outdoor plant without any special care. Guide to indoor plants| Best air indoor plants | Benefits of indoor plants

Information on Growing a Money Plant Tree

MONEY PLANT CARE

If you already have a money plant tree then the question arises how to look after your moneyplant. Money plants do not need much care if you do not overdo anything like sunlight, water and fertilizers. It is difficult to kill a money plant so it is known as devil's vine or ivy.

Some tips on money plant care are given below which will grow it faster.

When to plant a money plant

You can start planting your money plant in any season anytime.

Where To Plant

Money plant can grow in both direct and indirect sun light. However, too much direct sun light can turn the leaves yellow and even burn them.

I have placed my money plant in a shaded verandah where it receives only indirect sun light and it is growing very well, spreading on the ceiling with 8 to 10 branches - all about 5 meter long.

How To Propagate Money Plant

Money plant is very easy to propagate. The money plant is easily grown from a cutting. It can be grown in both soil and water.

How To Grow Money Plant in Water

Growing money plant in water is the easiest method. Watch below the Video for propagating money plant in water.
  1. The important step on how to grow a money plant from a cutting is to select a healthy branch, about 30 cm.
  2. Cut the branch below a node, that is the point from where leaves emerge (at this point you may see a small root). The money plant branch should have minimum 3-4 nodes on it.
  3. remove the lower leaves and put the cutting in a container like a glass or plastic bottle, glass of water, old electric bulbs, jar filled with clean water, etc.
  4. Keep at least one node below the water level. However, you can fold the branch inside the water to include more nodes in water to promote roots at all the nodes.
  5. Put the new money plant container near sunlight. You can hang the bottle so that the branches fall own.
  6. New roots will grow at the nodes in a few weeks.
  7. Keep changing water when it becomes turbid, may be once a week.
  8. Frequently add water to maintain the level.
  9. No fertilizer is necessary, but you can add some nitrate based fertilizer in water for faster growth. I, however, do not add any fertilizer.

Growing or Propagating Money Plant in Soil

First method
  1. Select a medium sized pot with holes at the bottom to provide good drainage. The growth of the plant depends on the pot size.
  2. Fill the pot with a free-draining soil. Actually any soil will do.
  3. Make a hole in the soil and insert the node of the cut stem (as above) and fill the hole with the soil.
  4. Watering Money Plant: Often one ask, how much water does money plant need? Water well once the roots are formed to grow it faster. Allow the soil to dry out between two watering. The money plant growing in soil does notneed too much water. Water your money plant every 8 to 10 days. I water my plant in about 10 days.
  5. Over-watering will cause roots to rot. Leaves turning yellow and curling up is the sign of excessive watering.
  6. Put a stick in the soil, so that the vine can climb.
Second method
  1. To help the plant to grow faster, first put the cutting in water as above and let the roots develop. You can then carefully transfer the plant to a pot containing soil.

Fertilizer For Money Plant

Normally, no fertilizer is necessary for money plant. However, you can give a liquid nitrate based feed occasionally. You can make a homemade fertilizer for money plant by adding used tea leaves, coffee grounds and powdered egg shells in soil.

Pruning and Trimming of Money Plant

If you do not prune your money plant, it will grow very long. To maintain the size of your money plant, carefully prune the plant each year so that it stays low to the trunk with a compact look. Following are the tips on how to trim a money plant to give it a bush like shape.
  1. Remove dry or yellow or dead leaves and branches to keep the money plant healthy and prevent the tree from wasting energy on a dead branch.
  2. Cutting the tips of the growing branches prevent the money tree from growing taller, after it reaches the height you want and to encourage new branches and more dense foliage.
  3. Continue cutting the extra leaves and branches to keep plant in shape. Cut about 1/3rd of a stem at 45 degree angle.
