Macadamia nut tree has originated from Australia, and also grows in Hawaii and Southern California. Macadamia Tree is a subtropical tree, so it does not tolerate frost and freezing temperatures. Only two varieties of macadamias, Macadamia integrifolia and Macadamia tetraphylla produce edible fruits.

Macadamia Cuttings

Macadamia tree can be grown from softwood cuttings. Take 8 to 10 inch thin softwood cuttings from newly grown branches of the tree.

Soil Mixture For Macadamia Propagation

  1. The macadamia cuttings need free-draining soil to root as cuttings of other plants. The cuttings will rot in water retaining soil. 
  2. Take a small pot having several drainage holes at its bottom and fill it with the rooting soil mixture. Water the soil thoroughly and keep the pot in shade for half an hour to allow excess water to drain out.

Planting the Macadamia Cuttings

  1. Scrap the lower part of the cuttings and apply rooting hormone. You can use commercial chemical rooting hormone or use natural rooting hormone like aloe Vera gel. Rooting hormone helps promote roots quickly.
  2. Make a hole in the soil and insert the prepared macadamia cutting in it, do not push the cutting.
  3. You can plant more than one cuttings in the same pot.

Put the pot in a green house to maintain high humidity. For this enclose the pot in a clear polyethylene bag and tie it at its top. Keep the bag in shade at a warm place. Open the bag every 2 weeks and mist some water, close the bag again.
