You may see bronze orange citrus bronze orange bugs sitting on young shoots of citrus trees in early summer. They suck sap from young shoots of the plants, resulting in wilting and darkening and ultimately causing shoots to die. This results in decrease in plant growth. The bronze orange bugs crawl very slowly on leaves. They are famous in producing stinking secretion.

I tried to get rid of bronze orange pests by removing them by hand using a long plier and throwing them away. But even after doing it for a  week, they visit my tree daily in morning and evening damaging the tree.  I do not like to kill them either.

Continuing my battle against these bugs, I formulated some sprays and experimented with them. I am successful in deterring these bronze orange bugs using the following recipe. I am glad that my plant is free from these bugs now. Horticultural pest oil spray

Recipe For Organic Pest Oil For Citrus Trees

  1. Take about 3 tablespoons of cooking oil. Take 3-4 large cloves of garlic, and put them in a muslin cloth and make a small bag. Beat the muslin bag to crush the garlic cloves and put it in the oil. Give a good shake to the bottle and leave it overnight.
  2. Put one teaspoon of this oil in about 1 litre of water in a spray bottle.
  3. Spray on the citrus tree when there is sun on the leaves so that the liquid dries in about 2 hours.

This spray will not kill the bronze bugs, but the smell of garlic will deter them and they will leave your tree. Also the bugs will find difficult to crawl on the oily leaves.

I used Canola oil for making the organic pest oil as above and sprayed on my lime tree and also on bugs for 2 consecutive days. The bugs have left my tree!

This oil recipe is also good for other citrus problems such as aphids, scales, sooty mold, leaf curling, etc.

I am also using this spray on my roses to prevent aphids. This home-made organic pest oil has proved to be a wonderful spray.
