Tips For Growing Coriander Indoors In Any Season

Following are the steps for growing coriander from seeds indoors or outdoors:

  1. Coriander Seeds: Buy coriander seeds from garden shop or you can use dried coriander from your kitchen or grocery store.
  2. Each whole coriander contains 2 seeds, so first split the seeds by gently pressing the seeds between your palms or using hammer.
  3. Sowing the Coriander Seeds directly in soil
    1. Sow the seeds directly in soil or first germinate seeds. You should sow the seeds directly at the final growing pot because as coriander has a deep taproot, so you may kill the seedling while transplanting them.(How to grow coriander from seeds)
    2. Growing coriander directly in soil will take at least 2 weeks to germinate, and sometimes you may fail to grow. You can use a paper towel to germinate the seeds faster and then plant the germinated seeds in soil.

4. Coriander Seed Germination

Coriander seeds are easy to sprout/germinate indoors.

  1. Soak the seeds overnight to soften their outer cover.
  2. After 24 hours, throw away any floating seeds, as they are not viable and will not germinate.
  3. Take a plastic Box and put a kitchen paper inside.
  4. it. Spread the soaked coriander seeds on the paper and cover the them with another paper. Spray some water on the paper and cover the box.
  5. Place the box at a dark and warm location. If temperature is below 12°C, then place it indoors in a warm place like AC room or behind or above your fridge. You can place the box outside if temperature is above 12°C.
  6. Seeds will germinate in 2 to 3 days depending on the temperature.

5. Plant the germinated seeds about 1 cm below the soil in a tall pot to ensure plenty of room for the long taproot to grow properly.

6. Soil For Growing Coriander

Use a well-draining nutrition rich soil. Mix cow manure or compost and some river sand or perlite in the soil. While cow manure adds nutrition to the soil and sand makes the soil free-draining.

7. Keep the soil damp but not saturated, otherwise seeds and seedlings will rot. The coriander seedlings will emerge in 2-3 days.  You should remove the weaker seedlings.

Where to Plant and Grow Coriander Indoors?

  1. Place the pot indoors if temperature is below 12°C at a warm place at a bright spot. Ideally, place it on a window that gets about 6 hours of direct sunlight. 
  2. If you do not have a suitable sunny spot indoors, then place the pot in the brightest area of your house.
  3. You can use a LED grow light to provide artificial light for your coriander plants to grow well.
  4. If possible take out the plant outdoors in sun for a few hours once a week.

Where to Grow Coriander Outdoors?

  1. Place the pot in full sun if temperature is between 12 to 25°C (50 to 77°F).
  2. Place in bright shade if temperature is above 30°C (85°F). If your coriander plant becomes too hot it will bolt and produce flowers and seeds.

Harvest coriander leaves as and when you need them. Harvesting will encourage more leaves on the plants making your cilantro plants bushy.
